TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin) roofing is much newer that other commercial roofing systems. EPDM as an example has been in use for more than 60 yrs, but even with TPO being a much newer project it still is used in most commercial roofing projects. TPO roofing is a durable single ply roofing system that has the durability and elasticity of EPDM but can be heat welled at the seams offering the ease of installation you would find in a PVC roofing system. TPO is made from polyprophylene and ethylene-propylene rubber layers that are been chemically welled to with scrim between the layers.
TPO has many benefits over other single ply commercial roofing systems without a huge difference in cost. In warmer climates you will benefit from it’s heat reflective color and it’s high UV resistance. TPO can be made in a verity of color in the event your commercial roof is exposed to the public. TPO offer great savings on cooling cost and a great price point compared to PVC which offers the same energy saving potential.
When installing a TPO roofing produce the phrase “You get what you pay for” should be kept in mind. TPO does offer high quality protection at a nice price point but will not get you the long life span offered my an EPDM or PVC roof. Adding thickness will increase the life span of TPO somewhat, but because TPO consists of multiple layer of rubberized roofing which is essentially glued together after some time the lamination will begin to separate. Increasing thickness will offer more protection from damaging weather suck as hail, high winds, and intense rainfall.
